NARFE: No Reason to Celebrate Continuing Resolution

Alexandria, Va. NARFE National President Ken Thomas issued the following statement in response to tonight’s passage of a continuing resolution funding the government through February 18, 2022:

“This final-hour agreement on government spending is nothing to celebrate.

“It’s fortunate that the American public will continue to receive vital services, services provided by public servants who won’t suffer through a furlough–this time. But why must our elected leaders dance so close to the edge of disaster?

“There’s little to gain from approaching the brink of a shutdown time and again, yet it creates a significant cost. Every time Congress waits until the last minute, federal agencies must waste time preparing for a shutdown, and federal employees must watch in fearful anticipation, worried about an unnecessary delay in their next paycheck.

“We also must remember continuing resolutions are inefficient and disruptive to government operations, forcing agencies to operate under the prior year’s budget, delay needed investments and put off planning for the future.

“Yes, NARFE is pleased federal employees won’t be forced to tighten belts and make tough financial choices, and that agencies can continue to fulfill their missions. But this latest continuing resolution is merely a sad alternative to what this nation really needs: passage of a permanent spending package.”
