NARFE Disappointed in Subcommittee’s Failure to Include Explicit Pay Raise in Appropriations Bill

Alexandria, Va. – In response to the House Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee advancing its FY22 appropriations bill, NARFE National President Ken Thomas issued the following statement:

“The subcommittee’s implicit support for President Biden’s proposed 2.7 percent average pay increase improves federal employees’ chances of securing a meaningful raise to keep up with rising private-sector salaries.

“But it’s disappointing that House lawmakers failed to provide clear support for our nation’s public servants with explicit language in the appropriations bill. This leaves federal employees in a precarious position. Now they must rely solely on President Biden to uphold a promise made in his budget request, rather than their elected representatives in Congress to secure a market-based pay increase. Civil servants remain dependent on the uncertain outcome of bipartisan, bicameral budget negotiations without any clear congressional support for their dedication to serving our nation.

“Our hard-working civil servants deserve better than silent endorsement; they deserve fully funded and open congressional support for a meaningful pay raise.”
