Question of the Week: TSP Inheritance

Q: My daughter has been living in Germany for a decade and wants to acquire German citizenship. Would this affect her inheriting my Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) account upon my death?

A: Your daughter’s decision to obtain German citizenship has no impact on any of the federal benefits that she would be entitled to upon your death, including inheriting your TSP account. There is also no rule dictating that your beneficiaries must be American citizens to inherit various federal benefits that may be payable upon your death. Click here for more details on this topic.
