The Way We Worked: Supporting the President

HUD employees in the 1980s

In this photo from the 1980s, staff at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) speak with the agency’s Inspector General. Today, the Department of Housing and Urban Development administers programs that provide housing and community development assistance, and works to ensure fair and equal housing opportunities.

Did You Know?

While the HUD was established in 1965 during President Lyndon’s Johnson’s “Great Society” initiative, its history goes back to the 1934 National Housing Act. The act created the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to provide mortgage insurance on loans made by FHA-approved lenders. The Federal Housing Administration is now a program office within HUD.
